As it is a higher category than a car licence there are different steps to complete:

Apply for the D2 & D4 application pack to add provisional entitlement. You can do this via the DVLA Website.

There are different modules to pass in order to achieve a C1 or C1E licence and driver CPC..

Module 1 is made up of two parts: Theory multiple-choice questions and Hazard Perception. Both these must be passed before you can apply for the 3A & 3B tests.
Module 2 is a written driver CPC test.

To book the module 1 and 2 tests please visit the DVSA online booking system: DVSA test booking

The Practical Test is now made up of two parts:
Module 3A is the reversing exercise (and uncoupling & recoupling exercise if you’re taking Cat C1E)
Module 3B is the on-road driving test.

The 3A module must be passed before taking 3B.

Module 4 is a practical driver CPC test. If you require this, please speak to us as this can be arranged too.

To drive a category C1 or C1E vehicle, you must pass module 1 (theory & hazard perception) and modules 3A & 3B.

If you are going to be driving a Category C1 or C1E vehicle for hire, reward or for commercial purposes (for instance for work), you must also pass modules 2 and 4 to complete the driver CPC initial qualification. You will be issued with a driver qualification card which must be carried at all times when driving.

If you do not wish to drive the vehicle for hire or reward or your use of the vehicle is exempt from driver CPC you are only required to pass modules 1 and 3, for instance, you don’t need CPC for NHS Ambulance Service, Motorhome or Private Horse Lorry. More details on this can be found at https://www.gov.uk/become-lorry-bus-driver/when-you-dont-need-driver-cpc

The Hgv Training Courses

Training is carried out over 2-3 days and the time is split up accordingly between the 3A module and 3B module as required. Due to the 3A test needing to be passed before taking 3B, the training may be split over a few days.

For the 3A module, you will need to be able to reverse the vehicle in an S-shaped pattern into a bay. If you are taking the test with a trailer you will also need to demonstrate the uncoupling and re-coupling procedure. These may seem fairly simple but the margins for error are very slim and so these will take some practising, even for those who can already reverse trailers!

The 3B module is the On Road driving. The standard required for this is exceptionally high.

During your practical road driving, the examiner will see how you:

  • use the vehicle controls
  • move away at an angle, uphill and downhill
  • use the mirrors effectively
  • give appropriate signals
  • show awareness and anticipation of other road users’ intentions
  • manage your progress and control your vehicle speed
  • deal with hazards
  • select a safe place to stop
  • There will also be 10 minutes of independent driving, designed to test your ability to drive safely while making independent decisions.
  • The overall drive is 1 hour in total – that’s a long time to keep every aspect of your driving spot-on and not lapse any concentration!

For both C1 and C1E the training courses are as follows:

  • 2 Day Experienced Course – Recommended for people with plenty of driving experience, good local knowledge and some experience driving larger vehicles and vans. Those looking to take the C1E must also be able to reverse trailers reasonably confidently too.
  • 3 Day Novice Course – Recommended for people who have not had any experience driving larger vehicles, or reversing trailers.

Unsure which course to go for? Why not take an assessment session for just £100 for 2hrs!

Training is carried out on a one-to-one basis but if you want to train with a colleague or friend, please enquire about discounted pairs courses!
